Why Should I Use a Citation Manager?

A citation manager allows you to organize your references, collect digital files such as full text PDFs, and cite sources automatically when writing in Microsoft Word or Google Docs. You'll need to select a citation manager to use throughout this project in order to:

  • Gather and store references from PubMed and the Cochrane Library
  • Deduplicate those references, so you ultimately only have one copy of each
  • Move the references into a screening tool, such as Rayyan or Excel
  • Cite references in your writing

Which Citation Manager is Right For You?

Not sure which citation manager to use? Check out the comparison chart, videos, and other handouts below.

If You Chose RefWorks

Step 1: Visit the Getting Started with RefWorks page to create an account.

You can explore the rest of the guide if you wish.

Step 2: Watch the RefWorks Workshop video.

This was originally created for KINS 5508, so the guide images look a bit different, but the assignment and thus the content covered is the same.

If You Chose Zotero

Step 1: Visit the Getting Started with Zotero page to create an account and download the Zotero software.

You can explore the rest of the guide if you wish, but please note: Zotero 7.0 was released in August 2024. The Zotero guide reflects Zotero 6.0.

Step 2: Watch the Zotero Workshop video.

The video, and screenshots throughout the KINS 5594 guide, have been updated to reflect Zotero 7.0, even though the Zotero guide has not.
