First-Year Writing Instructor's Guide

Support for FYW Curriculum Development

Booking a Library Instructional Space

Several classrooms are available in Homer Babbidge Library for hands-on research sessions for FYW and other instructors. Scheduling your sessions through Virtual EMS (our online calendar system) ensures can reserve the slot you want. Request dates as early as you can to avoid any difficulties in room scheduling!

The links below provide additional information. If you have any questions or difficulties with the scheduling system or reserving a room, please contact John Cropp (john.cropp@uconn.edu). For more general questions about library instruction, please contact the Reference & Student Success Services team (infolit@uconn.edu).

Librarian-Facilitated Sessions

We encourage FYW faculty to make use of library resources in conducting their courses, including using library classrooms, incorporating library-created tutorials into coursework, demonstrating search techniques and source engagement, and developing other active learning techniques that leverage the UConn Library's collections and resources.

UConn librarians are happy to collaborate on assignment design and revision to incorporate information literacy concepts; with assessments of learning objectives; and to consult on library resources and services. Information literacy is ideally incorporated iteratively throughout the semester rather than being condensed into a single class facilitated by a librarian; at the same time, we know that librarians can serve a valuable purpose in the classroom. If you would like to have a session facilitated by a librarian, either within the library or your own classroom, we request that you reach out to us to schedule a time to discuss your learning goals and to craft a plan to collaboratively develop a session that supports your course. Reaching out early is advisable, but we require at least two weeks' notice before the requested class date.

Please email john.rendeiro@uconn.edu to schedule a consultation or for any questions.
