Looking for a family-friendly activity during school vacation week? UConn Avery Point and UConn Library are hosting a free week-long celebration of reading, with story times with special guests, free book giveaways, crafts, and activities starting at 10:00am and 4:30pm each day Monday, April 14, through Thursday, April 17.

Kids of all ages will find activities and books to interest them, and the story times are geared specifically toward grades K-2. Special guest readers include K9 Officer Jazmine and Sgt. Justin Cheney from UConn University Safety, K9 Officer Chase and Ofc. Heather McClelland from Groton Town Police, Miss Emily and Miss Tracy from the Groton Public Library, Michael Grater from the Mystic & Noank Library, and Annemarie Seifert from UConn Avery Point. Story times and activities will be held in the library building or on the lawn nearby if weather permits.

Annemarie Seifert, Avery Point Campus Dean and Chief Administrative Officer, said of the event, “We look forward to welcoming families from across the region to celebrate literacy and the joy of reading on our beautiful coastal campus.”

“The UConn Library is more than just a place for academic research,” said Anne Langely, Dean of the UConn Library. “We love to work with our local communities to encourage readers of all ages. Studies show that young readers are more likely to do well academically, but we mostly do it because it’s fun.”

The UConn Avery Point Reading Celebration is the brainchild of Jamie Kleinman, Associate Professor-in-Residence of Psychological Sciences, who organized a similar program pre-COVID. Students in her Developmental Psychology class have collected books through a campus-wide book drive, designed publicity, planned crafts and activities, and will participate in the activies all week long.

UConn’s Avery Point campus has more than 450 full-time students, including more than two-fifths who are the first generation in their families to enroll in college. Situated on Long Island Sound, it reflects the region’s proud maritime tradition and active leadership in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields.

UConn Library is a vibrant organization made up of eight libraries across all UConn campuses and is committed to connecting with our community to provide the resources and services they need.
