What is this guide?
This guide is a gateway to library and other resources for ENGL 1007, which fulfills the first-year writing requirement at UConn.
While each section of ENGL 1007 is unique, with a different guiding inquiry, all are guided by shared habits of practice that reflect the program's philosophy: these are collecting & curating, engaging, contextualizing, theorizing, and circulating.
These habits of practice are introduced sequentially throughout the semester and are used to organize this guide into sections.
What's in this guide?
Each section represents a habit and provides relevant materials to that particular unit in the course: clicking on each will expand the menu of items within the section. Each section also provides more detail about what that habit means in the context of developing your writing and reading practices. We encourage you to wander around and familiarize yourself with the guide's layout and organization of its contents early in the semester.
How do I use it?
Though this guide is designed to be followed chronologically through the semester, developing these habits is a lifelong, iterative process. That means that you will return to them as the semester continues to further your confidence and facility in researching and writing. Habits are things that you do: becoming a stronger and more responsive writer is less an innate talent than something accomplished through working with others across different contexts over time. Remember that you can always go back to earlier sections of the guide and work out of order -- each section is meant to be self-contained in addition to addressing specific moments of the course. (You can also return to this guide after the conclusion of the semester!)
