Geographic Information Systems (GIS) — ArcGIS StoryMaps

Overview

ArcGIS StoryMaps is an ESRI web application that combines many different types of media with maps to create a dynamic spatial story. StoryMaps are easy to build, and can be used across diciplines to present on projects, share information, and present on research findings.

There are three main components to a StoryMap:

Narrative: The topic of your StoryMap will guide your choices when it comes to planning and building your project. Think about place, person, event, or phenomenon that you are focusing on in your story, what information you would like to include, and how you would like to present this information. Some stories are linear, in that readers are presented with all or some of the information in an order, and some provide information in a non-linear way, where users can pick what order they read your story in. Which way might fit your topic better?

Maps: Maps can have a central role in your story, or they can be one of many things that you use to communicate your narrative. You can include:

  • Interactive maps, including maps made in ArcGIS Online; map tours, which present locations linearly; and explorer maps, which present locations nonlinearly in an interactive viewer.
  • Static maps, such as map layouts produced in ArcGIS Pro
  • 3D scenes.

Media: ArcGIS StoryMaps allows you to include many different types of dynamic media in your project to make it truly immersive and interactive, including images, videos, audio, embeded content, timelines, and hyperlinks.
