Search Strategies

Boolean: Use Boolean Operators (AND, OR, NOT), where supported, for more precise searching.

For example:

(exercise OR "physical activity") AND obesity

Phrase Searching retrieves records containing specific phrases in the order in which they appear. Most databases require quotation marks. 

For example:

  • "play therapy"
  • "post-traumatic stress disorder"
  • "Hurricane Katrina"

Truncation broadens your search and retrieves all variants of a word stem.

Truncation symbols vary by database; the most commonly used is the asterisk(*). 

For example, a search for educat* will retrieve:

educate
educating
education
educational
educator
educators
