Library Guide for Students on the Spectrum

This library guide supports UConn students on the spectrum in accessing and utilizing resources and services at the Homer Babbidge Library, as well as awareness of resources beyond the library.

Library Resources

Noise-Cancelling Headphones

  • Limited number (3 pairs)
  • Available by request at the Library Service desk
  • Loaned for 4 hours with no renewals
    • Loan period may be shortened to facilitate return before the Library Service desk closes (see Library Service desk hours below)

Individually Wrapped Foam Earplugs

  • Available self-serve from the dispenser located on the Library Service desk, near the office supplies
  • Limited supply, one pair per student per day

Circulation Services

How to borrow a book with no human interaction:

 

  1. Go to the Self Check-out kiosk across from the Library Services desk, on the Plaza Level.
  2. Scan your UConn ID at the kiosk
  3. Scan the barcode on each book you wish to borrow at the kiosk. (Book barcodes are often affixed to the inside of the front or back cover or on one of the first few pages.)

 

 

 

How to borrow a piece of equipment or a book with human interaction:

  1. Go to the Library Services desk on the Plaza Level.
  2. Present staff* with your UConn ID and then tap the ID card on the Smart Card Reader
  3. Present staff* with the book or with your request for equipment or an item on hold

*NOTE: The Library Services desk is not staffed all of hours that the building is open.

Typical Fall/Spring semester Library Service desk hours

  • Monday - Thursday, 8:00 AM - 11:30 PM
  • Friday, 8:00 AM - 9:00 PM
  • Saturday, 10:00 AM - 9:00 PM
  • Sunday, 10:00 AM - 11:30 PM

How to return a book or piece of equipment

Equipment

  • Return to the Library Service desk during staffed hours (above), by handing it to a staff person

  • You do not need to present your ID to return an item

Books

  • Books can be dropped in the Library Service Desk return slot or in either of the self-service book return slots (described below) at any time
  • You do not need to present your ID to return an item

There are two self-service book return slots available 24 hours a day at the ground level North entrance of the Library (pictured right) and Plaza level South entrance near Bookworms Cafe (pictured left).
