The Democracy Maps project out of Movement Advancement Project, an independent nonprofit think tank dedicated to promoting an equitable and participatory civic life in America, is an accessible tool for visualizing and learning more about how complicated differences in election law and policy, decided upon by individual states, impact civic engagement and the security, integrity, and independence of our elections. The maps dive deep into more than 40 aspects of state election and voting laws and assesses which increase civic participation and which create barriers to that participation. Their transparent methodology explains how they formulate these assessments across six primary categories: voter registration, representation & participation, voting in person, voting by mail, election security, and independence & integrity.
You can research election law by state or by issue. Even browsing the variety of issues in each of the six categories will offer a roadmap for the breadth of election law issues you can consider and further research for a deeper understanding of how much variance there can be between states in American elections and about what the impacts are on civic participation.
