What is it?

A podcast is essentially a pre-recorded radio show that is available to stream or download for on-demand listening. Podcasts can take many formats (solo, interview, panel etc) and often have a theme or specific topic of interest. Although they started as an audio-based medium, video podcasts have been gaining serious popularity in recent years.

Best Practices

Plan out your content in advanced for a streamlined story

Plan our your story in advanced using an outline or by another means to know what you're arguing, what's coming next, timing, etc.

Cite your sources! Do this during the audio!

Simply mention in the audio if you are quoting somebody, where your statics came from, or other information.

Use music/sound effectively and tastefully

Choose music that reflects the mood and theme of the podcast you are creating.  For example: do not use something really up beat if you are talking about a serious and sad topic. Instead use sad slow music.

Who is your audience?

Your word choice, outline, and other podcast choices should be relevant and appropriate for your intended audience.

Quality of sound should be clear (free of background noise and static)

Be aware of what sounds are around you while recording. Try to minimize and eliminate any noise that is in the room when you record. Additionally, higher quality microphones will help keep static at bay! Reserve the UConn Waterbury Library Podcast Studio!
