Topic: Together Confronting Racism (2017) — The Flavors of Racism

Guide to support Metanoia 2017 at UConn
Racism is often conflated with other types of discriminations.

The following are often discussed as synonymous with racism:

  • Xenophobia
    • Islamophobia
    • Sinophobia/Anti-Chinese sentiment
  • Anti-Semitism
  • Nativism
  • White supremacy
  • Colonialism & Coloniality

Racism refers to the idea that a person's race determines their characteristics and their abilities, making them superior or inferior to other races.

Xenophobia refers to fear of the unknown or something different from oneself. Xenophobia is fear or dislike of not only an individual person or racial group, but of cultures and beliefs as well.

Nativism is showing a preference for native-born citizens above immigrants and naturalized citizens. This can stem from xenophobia or racism, but is not synonymous with either.
