Library Collections Purchasing in Response to COVID-19 - Fall/Spring Planning

The Library has adjusted ordering procedures and collection development priorities for academic year 2020-2021 to accommodate online courses, limited circulation of physical items, and reduced in-person staffing to process new items. Our priority is to ensure public and staff safety while continuing to support the UConn community's curricular and research needs.

  1. All ordering in 2020-21 will be for ebooks and other electronic materials whenever possible. The Library will not purchase print if an e-version is available.
  2. Print materials may be ordered to support pressing research needs if an electronic version is not available. Patrons will retrieve materials via low-contact pickup from the library. Due to quarantine periods for materials and limited onsite staffing, no rush orders of print are possible.
  3. The Library has partnered with academic publishers to give short-term access to tens of thousands of ebooks. Access to these titles will run through June 30, 2021 or longer. The most used titles will be purchased in perpetuity at the end of the academic year.

When possible, electronic alternatives of library-owned materials will be purchased to:

  1. Replace books/DVDs normally on reserve for courses;
  2. Replace DVDs that were shown in the classroom;
  3. Replace assigned physical materials previously available from the library
  4. Replace a physical copy of library-owned books needed for research if libraries are closed and no circulating options are available, or if the requesting patron is unable to pick up print materials.

Please submit a request to purchase a COVID-19 electronic alternative. You may also submit a list of your Fall/Spring/Summer assigned books and DVDs to as soon as possible, but no later than August 24 for Fall. Include date needed and assigned term(s).

If electronic versions are not available, library subject specialists will consult with faculty to locate an acceptable alternative.
