The term Afro-Latino is relatively new in academia. It was adopted as a response to the so-called invisibility of ethnic Black people while discussing issues of ethnicity. Although outwardly ethnic identity is considered more important than racial identity, the reality is that discrimination based on race is still predominant all ethnic groups. Other terms used to describe this group are Afro-Latin@, Afro-Hispanic or Black Hispanic.
